Pende female figure with her arms behind her back, Democratic Republic of the Congo 13" tall wood, pigment Provenance: Walking Man Gallery
This figure was reportedly collected in the late 60's or early 70's and shows some signs of age and use. It's a delicately carved and wonderfully expressive figure. What drew me to the figure originally was the serene expression on the face and the unusual hand gesture.
The pose with the arms behind the back as seen in this figure is often times a traditional gesture of sorrow or mourning in many African cultures according to the book "Gestures in African Art".
