Nyamwezi mother and child figure, Tanzania
19.5" tall
wood, beads, pigment
ex Jean-Pierre Hallet Collection
This object was exhibited in "Native Arts of the World At Home in Colorado - The Douglas Society Collects", 2006.

I really loved the movement in the carving of this particular figure. The child on her back is not your usual "static" child on a mother's
back, instead the child has it's own unique character. I like how the child is holding on to the mother's arm and how the child is looking
to the side like it is. The mother is holding the child's other leg and the child is grasping her other arm as well. An overall very unique and
interesting object.

$400

Despite its appearance, it is my opinion that this figure, although it shows some signs of age and wear, was made specifically for the collecting
market.
