Yaka hand masks, Democratic Republic of the Congo
aprox. 18"  tall including raffia
wood, pigment, cloth, raffia
Being sold on consignment from a private collection, MA.

$350 for the pair

Most Yaka masks are associated with initiation ceremonies and are generally only used once. I haven't come
across hand masks like this before. These objects were acquired by their owner, who was a US diplomat, during
his time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the early 70's.

These objects shows no real signs of age or use; it is my opinion that it was made specifically for the collecting
market.
