A beautifully carved figure with nice detail. This figure conforms to the style of figures produced by the Mvai group of the Fang people in the Ntem valley in Gabon. For other examples of figures from the Mvai group, see the book Eternal Ancestors, page 164-168. Additional information and examples of Fang figures can also be found on the Fang Byeri figures example page on Rand African Art.
In their original context, figures similar to this were placed on top of bark boxes that protected the skulls of important deceased family members.
Despite its appearance, I believe this beautifully carved object was made specifically for the collecting market.
