Ape and baby effigy figure, Bulu peoples, Cameroon 22" tall x 9" wide wood, pigment
Ape and gorilla figures from the Bulu people of Southeastern Cameroon come in many different variations and little is documented about their traditional context. It has been stated that the purpose of the effigy figures is purely for protection.
This particular example is a very nicely carved with an encrusted patina overall. I particularly enjoy the depiction of the baby in the front looking completely backwards and the pose of the mother's hand on the slightly bent knee.

Despite it's appearance, this object shows no real signs of age or use. It is my opinion that this object was most likely carved specifically for the collecting market.
