Attye maternity figure, Lagoon region, Ivory Coast 18" tall wood, beads, pigment
SOLD
A nicely carved maternity figure with a serene face and a baby on her back. The bulbous arms and legs are features found in Attye sculpture. These figures represented the forces of female fertility. In their traditional context they were used in rituals to make these forces work. They were also employed by healers to cure sickness and to convey messages to the spirit world.
Despite its appearance, this object shows no real signs of age or use. It is my opinion that this object was carved specifically for the collecting market.
